The history of Eco Church at St Mary's

The Eco Church scheme is run by the A Rocha organisation, whose vision is for churches of all denominations to care for creation as an integral part of loving their neighbours and following God faithfully. The Eco Church scheme provides a well-developed framework which helpfully prompts and guides where action might be taken at a local level. It covers a range of areas: Worship & teaching; Management of church buildings; Community and global engagement; and Lifestyle. A number of years ago, St Mary’s joined the Eco Church Community, and through the scheme achieved first bronze and then silver award status.

What's been happening?

Once COVID restrictions eased, a team was established to re-energise St Mary’s as an Eco Church. We reviewed our current standing, confirmed ongoing standards, and undertook a range of measures to maintain or enhance our status. By way of examples, energy is provided by a ‘green’ supplier, washable cups are used in church, and a number of other changes have been made. An Eco Church Weekend included a recycling effort, a meal based on food that would otherwise have gone to waste, a litter pick and a nature walk.

What's to come?
